Last night, I had the opportunity to share a meal with some family to honor a friend, a beautiful 90 year old person, who was visiting for the weekend. It was only the second time I had met this person, but I really enjoyed the chance to get to know her a little bit better while she visited.

As we were about to have dinner, my wife and I had begun to say grace, and we marked ourselves with the sign of the Cross. As we were doing this, I noticed that our friend was marking herself, too. When we started saying the traditional Cathol...

It seems that there are Catholic organizations, large and small, who have been at each other’s throats. Although it isn’t a recent issue, I’ve taken notice to it lately. Now, there are more than a billion Catholics alive today, that means there are more than a billion opinions about religion, faith and anything else regarding the Church. Personally, I subscribe to the orthodox, or traditional, ways of Catholic formation, catechizing and evangelizing in most, if not all, cases, but I can’t help but wonder… Why aren’t we giving c...

Well, here we are, day three of the Lenten journey. Just a couple of days ago, we kicked off the season with Ash Wednesday; and I’m sure most parish celebrants gave the faithful the annual crash-course on what it’s all about… the “reason for the season,” so to speak. More importantly, however, Catholics all over the world were brought to the sacrifice of the Mass, and were reminded of our spiritual birth as children of God, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” But this phrase isn’t just a reminder of our...

Just the other day, I was having a conversation with a friend of mine. The topic of past relationships managed to slither up out of the cracks they fell through however many years ago. It was a very interesting conversation to begin with, and probably a pretty healthy one, too. After all, some of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned are forged in the fires of the strong, weak and even volatile relationships that have come and gone throughout our lives. After a while, however, my friend had mentioned that one person from thei...

Over the past decade or so, it has become increasingly clear that racial tensions aren’t going to subside any time soon. It is a constant problem, a scab of sorts, which Americans can’t seem to stop picking. Having said that, I’ve got to say… what in the heck does it have to do with our faith?! I certainly agree that racism, as it’s defined, is not good in any way, but since when is everyone a racist, and more than that, who decided that “whites” are to blame for it today? I have a serious problem with that notion.

Now, there are about...

Currently on the scene, in every major city, ingrained in seemingly every liberal school of thought, is an interesting notion; A nihilistic, indifferent, or belittling ideal that molds and reshapes the understanding of morality, and religion for that matter, into something akin to a favorite food or movie; the idea that, for all intents and purposes, morality and religion are not necessarily true or false.

Sure, it’s a nice thought for some. It opens the door for countless possibilities.  If this is...

In the wake of the current affairs within the Church, I couldn’t have asked for a better first topic to bring to the table in my new blog. All over the country (and the world), there is upheaval with direct concern for the direction of the Catholic Church, as led by the USCCB and more specifically, by our Holy Father. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to sit in on one of the largest Catholic gathering on the west coast, perhaps the largest in the country. It may come as no surprise, then, that what I saw, heard and felt was any...
