Because of the vast amount of information and content I’d like to cover, this post is part one of a two part series. Please be sure to stay tuned for Part II of this post series. Thanks!

What is Natural Family Planning?

One of the more hot-button issues facing the Church today, particularly in the west, is the vast and wide use of contraceptives and birth control, and, a Church-supported method of regulating pregnancy called “Natural Family Planning” (NFP), which has been discussed, debated, and fought over for nearly two millennia.

A Need for Trust in God

In a world that’s inundated with natural evils, it’s no wonder why so many people rely on the providence of God. Without it, it would be hard to reconcile sickness, famine, violence, natural disasters, and any other hard fact of life. Even when it comes to tough questions, like deciding whether to take a different job, or discerning how many children God intends for us to have, God’s divine providence can reassure us in our decisions and reminds us that we are not in control.

The other day, I was discussing with...

When faced with a serious moral decision, people make that decision based on several things. First, they must educate themselves on the situation at hand; second, they need to be able to read their conscience; and third, they need to consult their faith. One of the greatest gifts that God gives us is the ability to develop a well-informed conscience that can help to guide us through our more serious moral dilemmas. It is possible, however, to have an underdeveloped conscience that can be detrimental to the spiritual life.

Historically,...

Warning: The content in this post is not necessarily suitable for young readers. It contains graphic imagery and involves real events and people. Please use discretion.

Among the travesties and evils of the world, few seem to mount in importance for me quite like pornography does. Although I try to make a point to combat evil on all fronts, pornography and masturbation have been significant for me because of the very personal impact they’ve had on my own life.

I was first exposed to pornography at a young age, maybe 9 or...

Over the past several decades, the Catholic Church has been very stern in its warning with regard to “New Age” ideas and concepts. One such concept, although not necessarily “new” is the idea of reincarnation. Reincarnation is the idea that once a person has completed their journey on earth and dies, they are reborn with the same soul, but in a new body. This concept is usually seen as another opportunity to grow as an individual, to correct mistakes that were made in a “past life,” and to make one’s self worthy of heaven by trial and...

Catholics are no strangers to rules and guidelines with regard to faith and morality. In a manner of speaking, it is the strictness and the structure of the faith that attracts so many. But for all of the Catholics who love those rules, there are droves who leave the Church because of some misunderstanding of the rules, decrees, doctrines, disciplines and guidelines by which all Catholics are obliged to live their lives.

Often, it is easy to think of these things as restrictive, boring, square, you know… awful. I’ve even heard the Chur...

When I go to mass, I go in as a sinner. I still remove my hat, I still mark myself with holy water, and I still genuflect to Our Lord before I sit down… But I do so as a selfish, carnal, sinner. At times, I fail to act with charity, piety, or with reverence. There’s no question that I’m not the epitome of the Catholic life. After all, no living person is.

Having said that, some other things are equally true. I love my faith, I’m always seeking a deeper, more intimate knowledge of God through the gift of the Sacraments, and I really do...

Driving in to work this morning, I was listening to a popular Christian radio station. I live in a small town, so the mainstream stuff is basically all I’ve got in the car.

I was listening to one of the more popular songs and I really started paying attention to the lyrics. I noticed that, in several of these songs, there was a common but concerning theme; an idea that not only propagates complacency and carelessness, but a blissful ignorance to the full truth about God, salvation, and faith.

Now, I realize that these mainstream Christi...

Last night, I had the opportunity to share a meal with some family to honor a friend, a beautiful 90 year old person, who was visiting for the weekend. It was only the second time I had met this person, but I really enjoyed the chance to get to know her a little bit better while she visited.

As we were about to have dinner, my wife and I had begun to say grace, and we marked ourselves with the sign of the Cross. As we were doing this, I noticed that our friend was marking herself, too. When we started saying the traditional Cathol...

It seems that there are Catholic organizations, large and small, who have been at each other’s throats. Although it isn’t a recent issue, I’ve taken notice to it lately. Now, there are more than a billion Catholics alive today, that means there are more than a billion opinions about religion, faith and anything else regarding the Church. Personally, I subscribe to the orthodox, or traditional, ways of Catholic formation, catechizing and evangelizing in most, if not all, cases, but I can’t help but wonder… Why aren’t we giving c...
